What Is Cuphead?

Released in 2017 by Studio MDHR, Cuphead was created as a visually stunning, hand-drawn run-and-gun platformer. With animation inspired by 1930s cartoons, the game features smooth animations, jazzy music, and non-stop boss battles. Players take control of Cuphead (or Mugman in co-op) as they engage in surreal boss battles, challenging fights, to collect money with which to pay off their debt to the devil. Because of its brutal difficulty and nostalgia factor, Cuphead is a dear homage to both classic animation and old-school arcade titles.

How To Play

Choose Your Character: Either Cuphead or Mugman will do (though co-op mode allows both).
Pick Your Outlet: Engage in fast-paced platforming levels or exciting-and-intense-boss-battle levels.
Master Your Controls:
- Movement: WASD or arrow keys.
- Jump: Space.
- Shoot: X or K key.
- Special Ability: C or L key (uses meter).
- Pause: ESC for the menu.
Survive: Dodge attacks, learn attack patterns, and annihilate enemies with powerups.
Co-op Mayhem: Partner with a pal to wreak shared havoc (and frustration).

Tips and Tricks

Get to Know the Patterns: Bosses have attack tells—memorize these so you can get out of the way.
Parry With a Purpose: Pink projectiles are great—they fill your special meter if you parry them (jump into them).
Weapon Loadout Matters: Use what works best for the situation (peashooter, spread, charge).
Move Ahead of Time: Never USBM; that might just be the beginning of your demise.
Save Your Super Arts: Pull out your EX moves for crucial scenarios during boss fights.

History

Cuphead started as a side project that the brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer undertook in an attempt to reproduce the "rubber hose" animation style of old cartoons. The game took almost seven years to complete because of the painstaking process of drawing frame-by-frame animation. It became an instant hit both critically and commercially, receiving praises mostly for its art, music, and punishing gameplay. In 2022, a DLC expansion, The Delicious Last Course, was introduced.
