What Is Monopoly?

Monopoly is the classic real estate trading board game in which 2 to 8 players build their financial empires at the cost of bankrupting their opponents. Roll the dice to buy properties and collect rent, or get rich by developing houses and hotels! The last player left with money and assets wins!

How to play

Setup: Each player receives certain amount of money to start with. Properties, Chance/Community Chest cards, and tokens are placed on the board.
Taking turns: Throw two dice and move your token. What you do after you land depends on where you land:
- Buy unowned properties: Directly purchase them or let the bank auction them.
- Pay rent: Land on opponents' properties and pay the owner for their value, with or without buildings.
- Build houses/hotels: After owning all properties in a color group, you can build there to charge rent.
- Special spaces: Draw Chance/Community Chest cards, pay taxes, or perhaps get sent to Jail!
Winning: Put your opponents in bankruptcy by out-earning and out-spending them until you become the sole solvent player.

Tips and Tricks

Go for the color group! (Build houses for huge rent on all-owner properties.)
Balance money and assets: Don't buy yourself into an early cash crunch; leave some cash-buffers for unexpected rent or fees.
Be shrewd in your trading: Trade away for properties that let you complete color groups, even if it means sacrificing a good property elsewhere.
Jail can be helpful: Late-game, staying in Jail prevents you from landing on opps' developed properties.

History

Monopoly traces its roots back to early 20th-century economic games, with the modern version patented by Parker Brothers in 1935. It has since become one of the best-selling board games the world knows, having been produced in many themed editions and several digital incarnations.
